With the number of breweries in the area approaching 20, Knoxville is quickly becoming a destination for those seeking out the best in craft beer. Participants on this tour will learn how local brewers and architects have worked to transform existing buildings into distinctive brewery and tasting room experiences. This tour will visit several local breweries including Elkmont Exchange by McCarty Holsaple McCarty and Balter Beerworks by Sanders Pace Architecture and Trapp Associates, both recipients of Merit Awards from AIA Tennessee.

Participants will:

  1. Discuss the building systems needed to support the brewing process and brew a high-quality beer for paying customers.
  2. Identify building code requirements specific to restaurants and craft brewery facilities to keep patrons safe and healthy.
  3. Learn how brewery equipment and operations can be successfully incorporated into the adaptive reuse of existing structures thus reducing greenhouse gasses and aligning with the 2030 Challenge.
  4. Observe the positive social and economic impact of craft breweries in Knoxville and how it has shaped a new urban community lifestyle

Participants will need to ready to board the shuttle promptly at 1:30 pm/Eastern. Please wear closed toe-shoes.
