April Wednesday Warrior: Whitney Johnson, Associate AIA, Associate NOMA, LEED AP BD+C

Whitney Johnson is an emerging professional in Nashville with just over 6 years of experience working at @eoaarchitects. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she graduated from Auburn University @auburnu in 2014 with a Bachelor of Architecture. She completed her 5th-year thesis at Rural Studio where she studied the 20K house product and prototypes, as well as built a new 2-bedroom 20K House named Idella’s House. She also received a Master of Integrated Design and Construction from Auburn University in 2015.

Whitney is an active member of @noma.nashville, the local chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects. She also recently completed 3 years of service on the Board of Directors for AIA Middle Tennessee as the liaison for its newly formed Government Advocacy Committee. She is currently an ex officio member of the Board of Directors- serving as a liaison for NOMAnash and @aiamidtn relations.

Whitney is interested in combatting the effects of gentrification in minority communities, in addition to addressing and reducing the pipeline challenges as they relate to the profession of architecture. As an extension of these interests, Whitney also became a remote adjunct professor at Auburn University in 2020 (and presently) for their exceptional Environmental Design program (@au_envd) within the College of Architecture, Design and Construction where she introduced a special topics class curriculum on the effects of gentrification in Nashville.

Since moving to Nashville, Whitney has become a big-time foodie and enjoys spending sunny weekends listening to live music or relaxing at any of the local parks. In her “spare” time, she also loves to read, create custom resin coasters (@the.blk.flamingo.creative ) and spend time with friends and family.
