Licensure Requirements – Architects & Engineers (SB1504 / HB1517)
STATUS: Bill Did Not Pass House/Senate – Dead for 2014
Sponsored by Senator Mark Green & Rep. John Tidwell
Synopsis:This bill clarifies statutory requirements for licensure to ensure that a duly licensed architect or engineer who is performing normal architectural and engineering services within the architect’s or engineer’s area of competence is not required to obtain additional licensure, certification, or registration to perform services (such as home inspections).
AIA Position: Architects are licensed, trained and educated professionals. Tennessee law recognizes the need “to safeguard life, health and property, and to promote public welfare” in that environment by ensuring that design professionals, such as architects and engineers, are properly qualified. Any architect registered in this state already meets the requirements of the Tennessee Architectural & Engineering Examiners and therefore should not have to obtain another license to perform services such as home inspections.
