**Important Update** as of Feb. 7, 2024 | TN Health Facilities Commission Updates Various Codes Approves 90-day Extension Waiver At the Feb. 7, 2024 board meeting, the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission (HFC) approved the extension request to allow projects to submit under either the previous (2012) OR the newly adopted (2021) code editions for 90 days (Tuesday, May 7, 2024). This allows additional time for projects currently being designed under the 2012 codes to be completed and submitted for review for the next 90 days. What You Need To Know: Please submit a cover letter for any project submitted during the 90 day extension designating the choice of code being implemented in the submitted project. For reference, see the links below for each codes edition: Codes (2012) Prior to January 1, 2024 Codes (2021) Effective as of January 1, 2024 Important: The 90-day extension ends on May 7, 2024. After this date, all projects submitted must be designed under the newly adopted codes. | We want to inform you of upcoming updates to various codes from the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission (HFC) that will impact designing licensed healthcare facilities in Tennessee. In August, HFC, through the Board for Licensing Healthcare Facilities adopted new editions of the following code publications to take effect on January 1, 2024: 2021 International Building Code, 2021 NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2021 NFPA 1 Fire Code, 2021 International Mechanical Code, 2021 International Plumbing Code, 2021 International Fuel & Gas Code, and 2017 National Electric Code. What You Need To Know: Due to concerns over the timeframe for implementation, Tennessee Health Facilities Commission (HFC) will be asking the Board for Licensing Healthcare Facilities for consideration to allow new projects to be submitted under the existing adopted codes for an additional 90 days at the February 7, 2024 Board meeting. If approved, this would allow additional time for projects currently designed under the existing codes to be completed and submitted for review. Those seeking projects to be constructed under the newly adopted codes listed above may still submit these projects in January 2024. From January 2024 through February 2024, HFC would sincerely appreciate that a cover letter be included for any project submitted during this timeframe designating the choice of code being implemented in the submitted project.
